HOW TO MAKE EVERY SOLO SOUND GREAT

WITHOUT SHREDDING FAST LINES, HITTING HIGH NOTES, OR WORKING OUT OVERLY COMPLEX POLYRHYTHMS.

If you want to make the maximum amount of improvement on your playing in the fastest time possible, then "Phrasing Secrets" can help you do just that.

HERE’S WHY:

There are countless resources out there that show you what to play. "Phrasing Secrets" shows you how.

If I read to you an amazing speech without a drop of expression in my voice, the words would fall flat, and you’d probably take a snooze.

That’s why merely reading the notes off the pages of etude books and transcribed solos will fall short of a good performance. You need to play each line with good phrasing.

In fact, I’d argue that how you play the notes is more important than the notes themselves, which is why "Phrasing Secrets" is so essential.

Plus, "Phrasing Secrets" is very much a teaching you to fish type course, so you’ll be able to apply the lessons to anything and everything you play.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE SECRETS YOU’LL LEARN INSIDE OF THIS COURSE

  • Say goodbye to boring, lifeless phrases. This simple three-step system works on any instrument and will make everything you play sound GREAT (even if you hit a wrong note)
  • How to finally rid yourself of the "hokey swing feel" that has been sabotaging your solos since you started improvising
  • How to play with the same finesse you hear from the pros who have ridiculous chops, amazing ears, and high-level music theory knowledge… without needing any of those things yourself
  • How to use "the seesaw technique" to make your phrases come alive instead of falling flat
  • Why practicing with your instrument will make you sound worse if you haven’t yet completed steps one through three of the "Phrasing Secrets" system
  • The secrets of "syllabic phrasing" … and the three easy sounds you can create using just your voice that will instantly improve everything you play
  • The simple thing you can do before you pick up your instrument to avoid the brutal mistakes that plague most improvisers
  • The thing that almost all beginning and intermediate improvisers do to try to play with a swing feel that actually ends up making them sound CORNY… and often creates bad habits that are difficult to break
  • A weird but simple airflow technique that even non-wind players can use to smooth out any phrase and make the notes "glide" right out of your instrument (don’t skip this one or you’ll end up sounding clunky and stiff)
  • A proven exercise to develop a stone-cold, unshakable inner confidence at keeping good time at any tempo without getting nervous and without fear of losing your place
  • Why the popular "triplet feel" and "dotted eighth – sixteenth" methods of learning swing are incomplete and leave you unsatisfied with how you sound
  • PLUS – The little-known secret to becoming a "human metronome" (no more relying on drummers and backing tracks to keep you from getting lost)

"Phrasing Secrets is the most complete and inspired answer I've found on the "how" of soloing.

I especially liked the systematic approach you use, all of the examples, and the lay back section!!

I'm an intermediate guitarist who has already taken lessons with a couple of jazz teachers, and I've never seen a course so focused, so well done, and so extensive.

I really got something from it – techniques and the way to work & practice. I will recommend it to people I know."

– Michel S.

"Phrasing Secrets is absolutely great. Jeff explains the essentials in such an easy way that you can immediately follow and apply them – just like an easy recipe for cooking.

After a short time, I gained a lot of confidence on how to phrase licks and longer pieces. It would have been great for me to have taken this class much earlier!

I can highly recommend it to anybody who is playing an instrument, not only for my fellow sax players."

Syncopation Secrets

In music, gravity is the secret to being able to execute syncopated rhythms accurately. Except we don't call it gravity – we call it the beat, more specifically, downbeats. And if you can't feel those downbeats, you can't play syncopated rhythms.

To be clear, syncopation is when you accent or emphasize notes that don't fall on the beat. Syncopation is the cartwheel, the kickflip. The downbeat is the ground. If you lose a sense of where the ground is, if you lose your feeling of gravity, if you lose your awareness of the downbeat, you will not be able to land the trick-y rhythm.

Think of how disorienting it feels to go upside down on a roller coaster. A lot of musicians feel like that when they play rhythmically complex music like jazz or funk.

Do you?

By the way, it's not just knowing where the downbeats are intellectually – you must be able to feel them.

If this is something you're struggling with, don't worry – I've been there too. I used to have a hard time keeping track of downbeats while playing syncopated rhythms.

I'd lose my sense of gravity.

But the good news is, there are ways of strengthening your awareness of downbeats. Over the past twenty years of working with students and working on my own playing, I've developed a series of weird but effective techniques, exercises, and mindsets for becoming comfortable playing all kinds of complex syncopated rhythms without losing the beat.

I've created a course with the best of those tactics. The course is called Syncopation Secrets, and you can get it as a free bonus when you enroll in Phrasing Secrets.

Bonus #2

Unlocking the Triplet Grid

I had a student a while back who was determined to improve her soloing skills, but no matter how much theory, ear training, or vocabulary we worked on, something sounded a little off.

It wasn't her rhythms...And it wasn't her pitches...

The problem was her phrasing – more specifically, her swing feel.

Remember this: A bad swing feel ruins everything.

Lucky for you, it's something that can be improved. And I've got an unusual exercise that makes all the difference.

More on that in a minute.

First, it’s important to identify what's wrong with your swing feel.

Chances are it's a grid issue.

What do I mean by that?

Well, your grid is the subdivision of beats you feel underneath whatever it is you're playing.

For instance, if you were to sing quarter notes while clapping eighth notes, that clapping would represent the eighth-note grid on which the quarter notes land:

Anyway...

in order to get a good swing feel, you need to feel the triplet grid.

Maybe you've heard about the relationship between swung eighth notes and triplets before. But merely understanding a concept intellectually is a far cry from being able to put it into action. The counterintuitive exercise I mentioned earlier does just that and more…

Because once your triplet grid is solid, not only will your swing feel improve, but so will your time.

That's exactly what happened with my student.

Once she got this exercise down, everything fell into place. Even the simple stuff she played sounded hip.

Want to give it a try for yourself?

Well, now's your chance. Because I'm including Unlocking the Triplet Grid as a free bonus when you enroll Phrasing Secrets.

Not only am I going to explain to you the Triplet Grid exercise, I'm also going to share a step-by-step practice routine that we'll work through together in real time.

Think of it as one of those virtual workout videos on Apple Fitness+ or the Peloton app, just with less spandex.
