Jeff's Shed sessions are, for me, a highlight of each month. I hardly know which aspect of them to praise more. There's his general instruction, his ability to take our submissions and always find things to both praise and to gently give improvement-areas to work on; his metaphors that make his instructional points stick indelibly in memory; his assignments which allow each of us, no matter what level, to improve our playing and our listening ability. There is also this: some weeks, it is that upcoming Shed session that helps me, from whatever funk I am in, to pull out my axe and put in the practice time in order to send in something for Jeff and the Shed gang to give feedback on. The Shed is like a ’safe space’. You can ask any question about improvisation or harmony or any aspect of musicianship and you KNOW Jeff will have something useful to say. But the best thing is the feedback on solos or exercises. The most I get out of my band mates is ’nice solo!’ whereas Jeff always says something like…’nice solo, but let’s see if we can improve it by X, Y or Z’. Always useful advice and always delivered with a cool metaphor.
