Blow Them Away In Your Next Solo

with the Classic, Modern, and Bluesy licks that will change the way you improvise forever

From: Jeff Schneider

Dear Improviser,

If you'd like to build a strong vocabulary of licks for improvising solos...the kinds of solos that YOU want to play...with licks that actually make sense for your musical taste and skill level, then this will be the most important letter you ever read.

But before we get into it, let's be real...

You and I both know there's no shortage of resources out there for learning more licks. Heck, you could stop reading this letter right now and go transcribe your favorite records.

The problem is, transcribing is REALLY hard and takes a lot of time. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, but it'd be nice to have something cool to play in your solos right here, right now.

Trust me, I know how it is...

I've spent a lot of time working on my soloing, and one of the things that's helped me make a huge amount of progress in a short amount of time was studying, memorizing, and integrating licks into my playing.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of crappy lick books out there. And I've sifted through plenty that were either too easy or too hard, too modern or not modern enough. And then there are the ones with lines that just sound...well...bad.

This soloing dilemma is what inspired me to create a new series of lick books called...

Finally, you can spend your practice time learning licks that are right for YOU.

No more fumbling through phrases that are too difficult or too elementary. No more having to hunt for a line that fits your style. With the Sick Licks series, you'll be able to find and learn the vocabulary that aligns with your musical taste and skill level.

The Sick Licks collection is organized by three important categories:

  1. Level
  2. Chord progression
  3. Genre

Level

Level 1 is perfect for beginners. Theses licks have fewer notes and easy rhythms but still sound GREAT. One of my biggest pet peeves is beginner-level music that sounds dumbed down. I wanted to create lines that are easy to play and sound just as hip as the lines in Level 2.

Speaking of which, Level 2 is perfect for intermediate and advanced players. These licks contain more notes and more rhythmic complexity, which allow for even more musical possibilities and ultimate hipness.

Chord Progression

Each book in this first release of the Sick Licks series contains 100 ii-V-I licks.

Here's a detailed breakdown:

  • 25 Major (short) IIm7 - V7 - IMaj7 licks in which the ii and the V are in the same measure like so:

  • 25 Major (long) IIm7 - V7 - IMaj7 licks in which the ii and the V each get their own measure:

  • 25 Minor (short) IIm7b5 - V7(b9) - Im7 licks in which the ii and the V are in the same measure:

  • 25 Minor (long) IIm7b5 - V7 - Im7 licks in which the ii and the V each get their own measure:

Genre

"Jazz" is a very ambiguous term, and simply creating yet another book of "Jazz" licks felt like too much of a one-size-fits-all approach. That's why the Sick Licks series contains separate books for improvisers looking for Classic, Blues, and Modern vocabulary.

The Classic Collection

The Sick Licks Classic collection is influenced by bebop and hard bop. Think Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Bud Powell.

The Blues Collection

The Sick Licks Blues collection is packed with...you guessed it...blues and soul. Think Stanley Turrentine, Ray Charles, Roy Hargrove, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Also, in this edition, the I chord in the ii - V - I is actually I7 chord rather than a IMaj7 chord.

Here's a lick from Blues Level 1:

And here's one from Blues Level 2:

The Modern Collection

The Sick Licks Modern collection is for the mad scientists among us looking for the hippest, most cutting edge sounds around. The lines are slightly more advanced and will take your ears on a harmonic and rhythmic roller coaster. Think Michael Brecker, Woody Shaw, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, and Kenny Garrett.
