HOW TO IMPROVISE SOLOS WITH MORE SOUL
There is a flavor of music that's hard to define...
It's a blend of R&B, neo-soul, funk, gospel, and smooth jazz.
And it sounds like this:
Yes, You Can Learn How To Sound Like That, Too!
Here Are The Cheat Codes:
Solo with Soul
50 Licks for Classic and Contemporary Soul
I've released lick packs in the past for musicians interested in classic jazz, modern jazz, and tasty blues. But never before have I created anything so specific to improvising solos with this level of classic and contemporary soul...
Exactly What You're Getting:
50 licks on the most common contemporary soul chords:
Sheet Music
- Notated with inflections, including grace notes, bends, and more
- Transposed into all 12 keys
- Treble and bass clef
- With and without note names in the noteheads
Audio Recordings
- Each lick performed on saxophone and keys
- Isolated backing tracks for practicing
- Midi files of each lick and backing track
What Makes This Lick Pack So Special:
The vocabulary included in Solo with Soul is unique.
This combination of R&B, neo-soul, funk, gospel, and smooth jazz is a niche genre of music and not well-represented in music education. I know because I grew up scouring the internet and bookshelves at music stores, looking for a resource that would help me unlock this specific sound I was hearing on my favorite Soulive, MMW, and RH Factor records.
I kept coming up empty handed. The only consistent resource I could rely on was the music itself.
Even today, there's not much out there that will point you to this sound, which is why I knew creating Solo with Soul was so important.
Unlike most lick packs, Solo with Soul includes more than just pitches and rhythms.
This style of music is so dependent on phrasing and inflections that notating all the grace notes, bends, glissandos etc. was essential. Finally all that "ear candy" is not such a mystery anymore.
Fact is, it's not easy to catch all those inflections when transcribing solos off records. After all, a grace note is just a blip and you might not even pick up on a scoop if you don't know where to listen for it.
Solo with Soul lays it out for you in plain sight so you too can make even simple phrases sound irresistibly tasty.
The backing tracks are just as soulful as the licks themselves.
Let me be clear: the backing tracks included with Solo with Soul are not from iReal Pro or Band-in-a-Box, which is why they're so damn stanky (and a blast to play along with).
And I'm not against practicing with AI-generated rhythm sections. But the truth of the matter is, these playalongs have little to no feel. And since a good feel is essential for playing this type of music, creating real tracks with which to play was a must.
Who Is Solo With Soul For?
Solo with Soul is for you if you want to incorporate licks into your solos that sound like this:
And because the sheet music is transposed in all twelve keys and written out in treble and bass clef, Solo with Soul is perfect for any instrument.
But a Word of Warning:
This collection is probably not for beginner students. So, if you just started playing your instrument and want to infuse your solos with this kind of sound, you might want to first check out Sick Licks – Blues, Level 1.

A Ridiculous Bonus You Don't Want to Miss
Want to hear the licks featured in the most soulful etude you've ever heard?
You got it!
The etude is called "Han Soul-O" and is completely comprised of the licks included in Solo with Soul.
I've even marked on the sheet music which lick is which so you can easily reference each line as needed.
Of course, you'll also get the recorded solo on both sax and keys, plus the isolated backing tracks and midi files.
How To Use Solo With Soul
You now know the three secrets to improvising more soulful solos: Feel, Vocabulary, and Inflection.
The Solo with Soul lick and etude pack is your map for navigating these secrets.
- Listen to the recordings and pay special attention to the feel and phrasing with which they are played.
- Study the sheet music and take note of the inflections, which are clearly notated.
- Play along with the audio recordings of the licks and etude – first with the lead line and then on your own with just the backing track.
- And to bring this full circle, please remember not to rush. Lay back on the beat and "arrive late."
- Reread step #4!
